My Job as a Coach is to Find Someone Better Than You

Here’s a quote we live by in our program:

"My job as a coach is to find someone better than you. Your job as a player is to make sure I can't."

At first glance, it might sound intense—or even a little intimidating. But the truth behind it is simple: growth comes from challenge.

As coaches—whether in travel baseball or at the high school level—our ultimate goal isn’t just to win games. It’s to prepare players for the next level, for the next challenge, and ultimately, for life. And that means surrounding them with competition that pushes them to their limits.

When we talk about “finding someone better than you,” we mean creating an environment where players are always tested—by teammates, opponents, and even themselves. The strongest lineups, the best teams, the most confident players—they’re the ones who have faced challenges that forced them to level up.

From a player’s perspective, the second part of that quote is just as critical: “Your job is to make sure I can't.” That isn’t about stubbornness or arrogance—it’s about commitment, preparation, and resilience. Every practice, every swing, every pitch is an opportunity to show that effort and focus can overcome even the toughest challenge.

Here’s what that philosophy looks like in action:

  • At practice: We pair players against others who are slightly better or more experienced. They struggle. They adjust. They improve.

  • In games: We play teams that test our strengths and expose our weaknesses. We lose sometimes—but every loss becomes a lesson.

  • In life beyond baseball: Players learn that preparation, persistence, and self-belief are what determine outcomes—not luck or shortcuts.

This mindset shifts the focus from trophies, rankings, or stats to something much more lasting: skill, character, and confidence. A player who learns to meet challenges head-on won’t just be better on the field—they’ll be better in every area of life.

At MakosNation, we don’t just coach baseball. We coach competitiveness, accountability, and resilience. And while we celebrate wins, what we celebrate even more is a player who refuses to be outdone—not because the scoreboard says so, but because they’ve worked harder, learned faster, and pushed themselves further than anyone else.

So yes, our job is to find someone better than you. And your job, as a player, is to make sure we can’t. Because that’s where true greatness is built—one challenge at a time.
